Anyone using NERDSEQ to control ES-9 Mixer via MIDI? - sak-rwsd - 02-16-2021 I’ve been gearing up to get a Faderfox EC4 to control the internal mixer in the ES-9 in standalone mode. If there isn’t too much stepping due to the resolution, I would want to tweak this live in a performance setting. But when working on compositions outside the DAW, I like being able to automate fades and such, and want to see how well the NERDSEQ would work for this as an alternative to an external MIDI controller. The only mixer module/VCA’s I have is a Kona Electronik Field Kit FX. It works well, sending modulation to it and then applying this to the mixer channel VCA’s, but then I end up with just one output, versus the multi tracking the ES-9 allows with it’s separate in’s and outs. With the NERDSEQ and Field Kit FX route, I have been able to get a nice smooth fade in, with the modulation output and glide on. Would be great to be able to apply some longer curves (e.g. logarithmic) to the fade, like in Ableton, rather than it being linear. I’m wondering if anyone here has tried connecting their NERDSEQ to the ES-9 to automate mixer parameters? I would love to be able to fade sounds in and out, via cc changes from the NERDSEQ, without buying another rack to house a dedicated mixer module (I have space for one more module and am otherwise content with my small 9U of Arturia rack brute system). There’s a 4 pin breakout on the back of the Expert Sleepers ES-9 PCB and I don’t know if there’s anyway to connect the two units from behind, or if any of the new or upcoming expanders would allow this. Something direct would be nice, otherwise I suppose I could try and get creative with my MIDI routing and my iConnect MIDI4+ box, which is a bit overloaded and capped off with devices that have no MIDI through (it’s been fun using the NERDEQ to start loops on my pedal board and such, in sync with the modular and synths). Also just curious if any of you have tried it - the NERDSEQ and ES9 mixer - and whether it’s worth the effort. RE: Anyone using NERDSEQ to control ES-9 Mixer via MIDI? - XORadmin - 02-16-2021 I think the new ADD/SUB/MUL/DIV features would be fine to let CCs glide to it's destination. Actually I assume that the CC response into the mixer would be already logarithmic. If it supports als NRPN messages you could even get a much higher resolution. As for the connections, I just learned that the ES-9 got already midi signals on the back panel. The NerdSEQ midi bus doesn't have regular midi levels and isolation on the cable. The expander takes care for the isolation and proper midi signals. So it's not a 1:1 connection inside the rack (except for if you take over the DIN midi connector pins (or the TRS-A connector with the 2HP one). RE: Anyone using NERDSEQ to control ES-9 Mixer via MIDI? - fadeddata - 02-17-2021 It's funny, I just emailed about a very similar question. I've ordered the TRS-A/2HP module and I'm going to velcro to the inside of the case and connect it to the ES-9. I'll try to remember to follow up with how it works out. |
