MIDI Multi Channel Recording Set Up - Joscuzz - 09-07-2022
Can't get things moving with the multi channel MIDI recording. I'm going round in circles trying to find the missing connection but, alas, I need assistance:
I have 4x MIDI channels with MIDI data set up in Ableton, and outputting through my MOTU to the NerdSeq MIDI expander on channels 1-4.
In the 'Track Assign' of the NerdSeq I have the Base Channel set to 1, and overrides on channels 2-4.
In the 'Input/Record' settings the MIDI Data Input option is on, and the MIDI Channel/tracks set to 'record ie, Track 1 Record, Track 2 record etc.
In the Project settings I have the Edit Mode set to 'On', and the MIDI clock set to MIDI to have the NerdSeq slave to Ableton while recording.
On playback from Ableton I can see the MIDI clips are active. The MOTU reflects MIDI as active through the device, which is correct because I can start/stop the NerdSeq via Ableton.
Any further suggestions please?

The overrides are for midi output, not for the input.
You would need to set midi channel 1-4 record to tracks 1-4 record.
Turn on midi data input.
Make on all 4 tracks an empty pattern.
Press record and be sure all 4 patterns are playing.
All 4 midi channels should record now into the patterns on track 1..4
Of course you can change any settings for these tracks routing to different output channels if needed.

So, if I understand this correctly, I have to set up 4x MIDI tracks via 'Projects' page 'Track Assign'(?) - Although I might have not explained myself intention properly; I was looking to record into separate columns on 1x MIDI track. Is this not possible?

You can record polyphonic into one track from one channel. But on different channels you would need different tracks.
If you for example record multiple channels into the same track, the sorting of notes might not be what you seek for.
