Resetting random playback - kilgore - 01-17-2024

Hey nerds!

I was following along with this video which was posted in the discord and practicing using randomness - super fun! I have a nice groove going, but I got stuck trying to develop it.

Just like in the SB Six video, I have a four note bass line going with the combined playback set to random refresh (CBPB 204). I also have the clock divided by 16 (CBPB 005). This works great and gives me a slow, ever changing bass line. Both CBPB effects are set in the FX columns.

The problem is when I switch to the next island down on the same track. I want the clock back to normal and also playback going forward instead of random. I set this in the top row of the FX columns: CBPB 200 for playback next forward and CBPB 009 for regular clock. The issue seems to be that when starting the new pattern, the playback is actually still set to random, so instead of starting on the first row and changing the FX, it just starts somewhere random. Its a 64 step sequence, so it takes a while until that row is randomly triggered. I tried just putting those FX values in every row so that they both trigger immediately, but then the pattern starts moving forward from the first random position thats triggered, meaning the pattern is out of sync with everything else.

Is there any way to start a new pattern on the same track WITHOUT the randomness? Can I set the Nerdseq to always read the first row of a new pattern first, despite previous random playback setting? Do I need some kind of in-between pattern that resets things?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Manual Page 34-36 (the bold parts):

CBPB → Combined Playback FX
This is a multifunction FX to change the clock settings, playback order,
transpositions and to execute live jumps between patterns.
The first digit defines the functions:
0XX Change the clock type after the end of the current playing pattern. The new
pattern will play with the new clock setting.
Here you can set the different dividers and multipliers for the current track. Possible
settings are from 000 to 010:
/7, /6, /5, /3, /32, /16, /8, /4, /2, Normal clock, *2, *4, *8, *3, *5, *6, *7
This order is chosen on purpose as mostly base2 dividers and multipliers are used
around the regular clock. (See track setup)
The first digit got an additional function to either let the new clock change with a new
pattern (after the end of the current playing pattern) or to force to the new clock
setting directly.
1XX Same as 0XX but it changes the clock immediately. Use this with caution as
this might cause a un-synchronized pattern if being called somewhere in the middle
of a pattern.
If it’s being called from the first step, the new clock setting will run properly
synchronized within this pattern. (Depending on if the last pattern was synchronized)
2XX Playback Order. This defines how a track should play its pattern. The default
setting is ‘Forward’ where the sequence in the track runs regular from step 0 to 63
(or less). If used with the 2XX setting then the new playback order will be activated
after the current pattern is finished.
Other settings are:
Backward: Plays the pattern from the last (depending on pattern length) to the first
position / step.
PingPong: Plays the pattern forward and backward
RND Keep: Random Keep. Chooses a random order once and keeps this same
order playing until it is changed.
RND Refresh: Random Refresh. Choses a new random order each time a pattern is
finished.
With both random settings all steps within the pattern length are always played!
Even-Odd: Plays first the even steps and then the odd steps
3rd: Plays every 3rd step
4th: Plays every 4th step
5th: plays every 5th step
ROW E-O: Row even/odd. Plays first the even rows (4 - 8 steps for each row
depending on the pattern length) and then the odd rows
UP/DOWN: Will play in a Up/Down order (on a 8x8 / 4x4 grid)
SPIRAL: Will play in a spiral order outside in (on a 8x8 / 4x4 grid)
SPIRAL<>: Will play in a spiral order outside in and inside out (on a 8x8 / 4x4 grid)
1ST-Last: Will play the first step, then the last step then the 2nd step then the 2nd last
step etc…
10325476: Will play in the numbered order (step 1, step 0, step 3, step 2 etc…
00112233: Plays each step twice (within the pattern length)
CRAB: Plays Step 0 then Step 1 then Step 0 again then Step 2, then 0 again etc…
DRUNK: Plays the regular order but mostly a step before or ahead or double...
3XX Playback Order now: Same as the 2XX command except that the new
playback order is directly active

Thanks Thomas! It seems I have stumbled over the difference between the regular command and "now" command before and keep getting them confused. Thank you!

RE: Resetting random playback - kilgore - 01-17-2024

I have to admit, I'm still a bit confused about this. It seems still to only work some of the time. Using the "now" commands work for getting from the first pattern to the next one. Now though, when I move back to the first pattern, it plays a few notes at the regular clock speed before switching to the divided by 16 (even though that command is on the top row). Somehow I just can't seem to get consistent behavior.

I uploaded the project to my other question I just posted. Both questions are dealing with track 1!

For future readers, this question got answered in another thread:

Quote:XORadmin Wrote:
OK I think the issue is here that they are 2 commands with the 'NOW' attribute while one is the pattern order command which possibly jumps directly to another step defined by the pattern order.
I got to check how easy it is to have the clock command also as a 'pre-check' command to change the clock, without generating an unstable situation = keep everything in sync as good as possible.

Hey! I think this reply was actually meant for my other topic (my fault for having two threads with the same example)

But yeah, I also think the "random now" command was getting in the way. I even tried putting the clock command in the first FX column so it would hopefully get read first, but didn't work.

But while I was out this evening the solution came to me! In another project I was using the SPFX 00C command (random jump) to get a random pattern from a set of notes. This command does not seem to need to be updated in subsequent patterns. So using that command instead of of teh CBPB command cleared up this issue! Now I can jump between patterns and the clock changes correctly, and I get my randomness where I wanted it. So cool that there are multiple ways to get the similar result.
