Feature Request: Mapping Destination for Current Playing Pattern Step
#1
Hi Thomas,
I have a feature request for the Mapping Matrix that I think could open up some interesting generative uses.
Would it be possible to add a Mapping destination that writes a note/trigger to the currently playing pattern step, rather than requiring a fixed step destination like NT00, NT01 ... NT3F?
For example, something along the lines of:
TRCK → SLCT → NT CURRENT
or
TRCK → SLCT → NTPW
where the destination row is automatically the track's current playing row (PTRW).
The idea is that a Mapping calculation could generate a note value and permanently write it into the pattern as it plays. A value of 0 could behave like the existing NTxx destinations and remove the note + trigger.
NerdSEQ's CV note recording already seems to have this concept internally, since incoming CV can be recorded into the currently playing step. It would be great if Mapping could access that same kind of destination directly.
My use case is a live generative pattern writer: Mapping generates notes/rests while the pattern plays, continuously rewriting the actual pattern. When generation is disabled, the resulting pattern remains and can be edited normally.
Currently this seems to require a separate NTxx Mapping row for every possible pattern step because PTRW can be read as a source but can't be used to dynamically select the NTxx destination.
Thanks!

Just to clarify: by “currently playing pattern step,” I mean the current playing step of the selected track/pattern (TRCK → SLCT), not every pattern that is currently playing.

Basically I’m looking for the equivalent of TRCK → SLCT → NTxx, except xx would automatically follow the current playing row of the selected track.

How do you have that in mind. When should it actually insert the note? I guess a rising edge on the former step would be a solution to not just fill in on change. They are multiple new commands in the mappings like this.
