MIDI step sequencing + triggers

I feel like this *must* have been asked before but I can't for my life find it.

Is there any way to disable the automatic triggers that are written in when you use the MIDI keyboard to step sequence? 

I would prefer to just use auto-gates and add stops etc the same way as if I'd enter notes with the Nerdseq's buttons.
