Turns out there was indeed a configuration problem with my brand new Expert Sleepers CVM-8. Once I got the CVM-8 configuration fixed (which took quite a bit of effort) the it worked really well with the NerdSeq. 

So that others won't have to go through the same trouble I created a video on how to get the CVM-8 working with the NerdSeq, even if its configuration is incorrect. https://youtu.be/FiHjRIO67Vo
