Personally, and this might just be me though I suspect it would also affect others, I too often press shift tentatively, almost reflexively, release it, and then do something else (often involving navigation.)
I am liking the idea of supporting a combo of a single CV input and some buttons on the NerdSEQ, rather than requiring a CV gate, but I think it would have to be a key combo. Critically, I think this would need to be a key combo easy to hit with either hand without requiring the use of both.
From XORadmin’s reply, though, it seems like a momentary gate is going to be your best/only option.
