MIDI - need a solid setup with Multi I/O
#1
Hi there,

I lately used Nerdseq with the Multi I/O expander as a Midi Interface to communicate with Ableton (12.3) on Mac.

As the USB Device connection caused occasional "freezing" of single channels, I used the E-RM Multiclock instead as USB -> MIDI converter and sent MIDI to the TRS A Input - which didn't solve the problem tho. (which for me kind of takes the NerdSeq out of the equation for causing problems)

Can anybody point me in the right direction what might be the issue, or what other setup you would recommend for a hybrid setup with Nerdseq?

What do you mean exactly with ‚freezing‘?
Which firmware? Can you share your project/ a video where I can see what freezes exactly, to find out what happens exactly.

I'm sending Note On and Note Off via Midi,  and the gate won't close (no note off received) , most of the time on channel #01 - that maybe coincidence tho - voltage is always way - suddenly...

I'm on FW 3.0 - I cannot reliably reproduce it. Will work on my project today, lets see if it happens again. For now I'm sending Clock into TRS A from Multiclock (fed by Audio Signal from Ableton), and Note / Gate Info via USB DEVICE.

As i wrote - I think Ableton or my USB connection maybe the cause - running USB via a powered Hub from a MacBook Pro M1.

Will post more info once I can reproduce the error.

It would be interresting to see if this happens also if you for example only got track 1 assigned and not the others. Also with and without the clock.
Just to figure out if the hanging notes issue disappears or not.

What do you mean with note / gate info? I assume regular midi note on/off?

yes - Midi note on/off - sorry...

ok - so here is my latest finding:

- Using Nerdseq as USB2Midi Host - channel 2 "freeze" after a  few seconds only;
- Statusbar of NerdSeq shows that note on/note off is received, but is not forwarded to output (Trigger 2 in my case)

Powercycle: works again ...  Huh

- changing Midi out in Ableton to ERM Multiclock  - TRS-A In on Nerdseq: Signal as expected

if there is any way to log what happens let me know.

I still haven't found a reliable way to reproduce the error  - and I hate that as I know it makes debugging quite difficult ...

Please share the project. They are surely project-settings that can have an impact (not that they are wrong settings but rather so I can reproduce it and test myself). You can send it also as a PM.

Also please remove the note in offset and check if the problem is still there.

so - I worked the last several hours back and forth with NerdSeq and E-RM Multiclock as USB Host, clock always send via E-RM to TRS-A of Multi I/O.
With Nerdseq as Host, I still do get my freeze or hang - also tried a new project on NerdSeq. Went back to Ableton 11 - same thing.
I'm happy to give more input if needed. Thanks for investigating

Good Morning Smile
Today another phenomenom -E-RM input on TRS A - channel 2 routed to track 2 input

Problem: Hang of Track 1 (?)
Solution for now: Unplug USB Cable in Device port; Delete all unused mappings, just leave TRS A channel 2 -> Track 2 Input

I will dive in today. Unplugging the device port and plugging in again can cause buffer problems on the device side (and so a restart of the multi-io to work well again), so I don't recommend that.
