A few questions about upcoming expanders

Hope you don`t mind me asking since this might the appropriate place. How many ports will the new USB-MIDI expander have? One USB and additional MIDI-IO? Are those gonna be full midi sockets or midi jacks?

1x USB Host, 1x USB Device, TRS-A Midi Jacks and some small extra stuff.

Awesome! Another question would be regarding HDMI expander. Will it just copy the nerdseq screen or will it have some other expanded functionality? Perhaps viewing larger portion of the screen/pattern than 16 steps at nerdseq screen?

That is a secret. Cool

But it will definitely be no larger portion of the screens. That would be a too big impact of everything. But for the rest I think I will not disappoint you.

The good news is that the first production batch arrived yesterday. I am confident that I can deliver sometime begin of march.

My NerdSEQs currently have 4 expanders and 1 expander respectively, so I’m curious as to what I might need to move around.

I’ve been assuming that the upcoming MIDI expander uses the I/O expander connection, rather than an NSA connection, and that the HDMI expander uses one of the four NSA slots. Or are you working some other magic to avoid consuming an NSA slot? Smile

Video Expander uses NSA slot 4 fixed. (that was not possible in a different way hardwarewise).
Advanced Midi expander still uses the Midi port only.

So I guess you need a 3rd NerdSEQ then? Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin hahaha

Two Euro plus one Portable, quite likely. Smile

And thanks for the quick confirmation, Thomas.

I honestly haven’t thought too much yet about whether or not I’ll need/want the HDMI expander, not unlike how I’m yet to decide on whether or not to add Launchpads. Those kinds of things are in the gray area when it comes to keeping my system self-contained.

That said, I’ll definitely put some thought into moving one of the CV16s over to the other NerdSEQ, and in the meantime can try to use one of them only from the assigned lanes, just so it can be easier to move later without having to update too many patterns.

Addendum: Hmm. Even just thinking a little bit adds a wrinkle for me, in that I had been aiming to only have one CV16 track on the other NerdSEQ, but a CV16 track can only control its assigned expander and there isn’t (that I can find) a way to control a different expander even if only from the FX lanes. Definitely more thought required.

Worst case I’ll save that third CV16 expander for use with a Portable later. Big Grin

Yes the problem is here that there is not enough information possible to control another expanders features.
Just to think about what is needed at minimum:
-> Info which NSA/Expander it is
-> Info what type this expander is
-> Info which command you want to do..eg notes or CV
-> Info about the needed values ..eg Note C-3, Modulation value 3061 (BF5), Trigger type 43 etc....

That defintely doesn't fit into a FX part with 4 columns. Same for a CV16 column, it would be too much information per expander type (and more are coming).

Absolutely, Thomas. That makes complete sense.

I’m experimenting soon with how much pattern reuse I can leverage across tracks, hence the desire to focus that NerdSEQ on as many modular tracks as possible (mostly because of CV16 currently lacking patches and tables, otherwise I’d consider running every track as a CV16 track.)

If I end up doing less of that kind of reuse, or if certain “subsets” of reuse appear, then I could probably put one subset on modular and the other on CV16 type tracks, albeit with patch and table being unavailable for those.

Or I’ll just do as mentioned before and save a CV16 to bridge the Portable into the system once that’s a thing. Or, if stronger “subsets” appear, I’ll head down another path I identified, which would be to move the two Trigger 16s to the other NerdSEQ so that one has all the CV16s and the other all the Trigger 16s, and then the “subsets” could all use modular track type and have patches and tables. Blah blah blah, suffice it to say that I have a lot of options, though things would be made even easier if...

Patches and tables for more track types when? Big Grin

Yep patches and tables are planned.
Though, Note transpose for CV16 would be for 1 CV only. Or what you fill in the FX. There will always be only 1 table per track.

That makes perfect sense, and is what I figured you’d do. (Though the mental image of six running tables is entertaining. Smile )
