Okay, but I deleted the envelope (or at least at my end), so the envelope (which shouldn't exist) shouldn't be effecting anything. Where have I gone wrong, it doesn't seem to make sense?

Where have I gone wrong, it doesn't seem to make sense? Envelopes are its’ own module. You don’t delete them from anywhere in the pattern (and you don’t do the assignment there either). It also wouldn’t make sense, just think about you delete an envelope in pattern 5 but want to use it in pattern 3. Still, your source is Gate1 and if gate1/trigger1 is set, then the envelope starts. No FX at all needed here. If you don’t want it like this, then delete the source of the envelope and set and reset the envelope gate through a FX. So multiple possibilities and flexibility. Trust me, it makes totally sense but check the manual to find out how it works together.

I don't really understand, but I'm going to read the manual and see if I can understand (what you're explaining)*. I'm not sure why my source is Gate1, since I haven't set a gate (maybe you don't need to).
Secondly, where do I delete the source of the envelope? Lastly, I think I tried running the FX command SPFX 00A & 00B, but didn't hear any difference. Thanks again for all your help, I'll get the hang of it eventually - I'm having much fun playing with the module anyhow. But, as you know, it can be very frustrating at the beginning when simple things don't work, because you don't really know what you're doing. * = If you could point me to the section I need to look at in the manual, it would be really helpful. As you know, there's a lot to read, so it's easy to misunderstand (or pass by) something.

Press OK or leave the menu to activate the new setting. Not sure what SPFX A and B are doing right now since I am more in front of the tv and not behing the rack this evening ;-) I will check that tomorrow, but mainly I would expect these to work.

For SPFX 00A & 00B to have a noticaable effect, you have to set/change some FX values first. Possible candidates would be track speed or transposition or maybe some random functions though I haven't tried that. Kind regards, Michael
Ok, I think there's something that I don't understand (relating to the file I sent).
If I understand correctly what you explain 'deleting the source', to find the envelope source go to Automator screen > press the Atomate button and you arrive in the Envelope screen. From there you can select the various possibilities, Attack, Decay, Source, Destination. So, even when there's no envelope in the Automator screen, are these settings still active? As I explained (and it should show up on my file), there's no envelope in the Automator screen - I created one, changed the settings, then decided I didn't want it and deleted it from the Automator screen. As for the TV, I totally understand. I'm a music teacher, and since yesterday was a holiday I was trying to get as much done as possible on the rack (and having fun with the new NerdSeq). Today .... it's back to school! Thanks everyone for chipping in to help out. p.s. I think there shouldn't be any trace of the SPFX as I deleted those too (normally).

You can route envelopes additionally through automators which can add some more effects and other additional destinations. But normally you don’t do that but select the destination in the envelope directly.

Okay, I think I'm starting to understand. Although I'm a newbie, I do come from a music programming background (SuperCollider*), and it seems confusing that an envelope is already there without you assigning it - although I do understand (now), after re-reading more closely the manual:
"Note that this is not an envelope generator within the Automators, but it rather uses the output of the integrated envelopes of the NerdSEQ to route into the Automators." page 74. I'm going to go back to the module and see what you've explained. BTW, I will try (later) to reproduce the original problem that i started this thread with - the SPFX random bit. * = in Supercollider, there's no envelope until you make/create one and assign it.

They are inactive until you at least define a source or fire them from an FX. For the rest they are like they don't exists. The difference with supercollider is that it is object oriented and got gazillions of megabytes of memory and processor speed. And the NerdSEQ is a little embedded system, so I got to take care of all ressources to be sure all still works without any performance issues.

Sorry, I wasn't criticising the NerdSeq, I was just comparing workflow.
Anyhow, I went back to the module and cancelled out the envelope as you explained and everything worked again - thanks, we live and learn. Anyhow, I'm already back with a new problem, which I guess is related to the last one. I clearly haven't grasped the workflow of the NerdSeq yet, but producing problems is always a good way to learn. So, in my new file - this time called "problem" rather than bug. As you'll notice, I've made two patterns 00 and 06. If I play pattern 00 you'll hear a long running C. Then on pattern 06 I added a table with TP values to see what happens. Now, if I go back to 00, the table in 06 affects the pattern 00. Why is this, doesn't a table only affect/controls the pattern its assigned too? And secondly, if I stop everything (shift+stop), and then start 00 again, the table (in 06) isn't having an affect on 00. So, once a table is created, is it active (affecting) on all patterns created on that track? And if so, does that mean that you need to put a command to stop it from effecting/influencing any patterns afterwards? Thanks for you help, much appreciated. |
