[NO BUG] Sega Controller laggy-ish / Requires two inputs to perform function
#1
Hello there!

I'm returning back to my Nerdseq after not using it for a bit. I use a 6 button official Sega Genesis controller. In checking the Sega Gamepad Settings screen, all buttons seem to be responsive and without issue, lighting up the little lights next to each one but in actually trying to navigate the device, inputs seem to be dropping, usually (but not always) requiring two or more presses to actually perform a function such as moving up or down a row on the screen or going to any of the sub-screens. I'm on version 2.01A and utilizing the Gamepad 4U extender with the Multi-IO expander.

I've tried creating a new project, to no avail, as well as a few power cycles and ensuring the controller is properly seated into the port.

Any ideas? It makes the controller functionality fairly unusable for me as it is.

Thanks!

I would say your Sega controller is the issue.
What do you mean with official? One of the 90’s controllers?

Yeah, one of these guys:  [Image: il_794xN.1381513564_3lwo.jpg]

I would think that it's a bit strange that the Sega Gamepad Settings screen is parsing all the inputs accurately and lighting up next to each button as expected if it's an issue with the controller though right?

I would say it's strange that it works well here and with many other users with the exact same version ;-)
So I guess it might be a controller issue.

You could also try to connect the gamepad expander alone to the NerdSEQ to see if it works better.
Are you sure it is not the 'official sega' retrobits controller but a real original. I would definitely try also another one. And never hotplug either.

Sorry, it wasn't meant to be offending. Thats why I added the ";-)"

Hotplugging shouldn't break anything. But since the pins are not fully protected I just don't suggest that. Better be safe than sorry.

I never had any issues with a 90's controller. Also the cheap ones on aliexpress work flawless. Only the retrobits ones (which got the official Sega license and look very original) claim they are the same while they definitely aren't and tend to break with both NerdSEQ and real Sega consoles.

Maybe you can share a video where you can show me the exact behaviour and also the gamepad settings?
Also the Video-USB connection is not enabled by any chance?

I figured it out!

I used to use a Video expander at one point, but I'm not anymore, however I noticed the Video mode was still set to clone.

Once I turned it from Clone to Off on the video settings, the controller started to work perfectly again!

Not sure why, but yeah! We're good! Thanks for your time anyway and hopefully my silly edge-case can help you patch some sort of bug.

Hehe, thats why I asked :-)

I know exactly why. Both, the Video USB and Sega controller generate the same external events and an unconnected but enabled Video part interferes then with that (the same is in the other way around possible, that's why you can turn it on and off in later versions).

It's not really a bug, but it expects data on a floating line and it gets the data cause of the floating line :-)

Fine that it works!
