Nerd Randomize Values when empty?

Hi!

Apologize if this question had already been asked but why I cannot randomize values in a pattern if there are no values yet?
Is it not supposed to fill a step with a random value? Or have I misunderstood the feature?

I also find it a bit silly to have to fill in numbers before I can randomize them (is there a way to avoid this?). 

I just thought of a way to have it both ways. The random function could first check if all the selected cells are empty, and if they are, it puts random values in all of them. If they are not all empty, then it only randomizes the non-zero ones, like current. That would be a small change and keep it very close to the current functionality. It is not a big deal, though.
