what's the best way to troubleshoot or provide more info for an "UPDATE FAILED" message for the Video expander? I've tried a few different (confirmed empty) sd cards with the expander and have been careful plugging in the ribbons on the back but haven't been able to get past the error.

I also noticed before this that trying to change any settings on on video expander couldn't save and would result in a "Fail" message.

Both cables, the 14 pin and the 12pin must be inserted properly from the VEX to the NerdSEQ.
Maybe the 14 pin cable is not good anymore? Surely try both slots (and never ever hotplug as that can kill things)
Also the video expander must be working already, the original firmware should be on the VEX SD Card (not sure if you copied everything).
Other things to consider: power supply and worst case a hardware issue with either the VEX or the NerdSEQ.
I assume a USB Keyboard is also not working then?

I am trying to isolate some variables today, trying different cables and removing all other expanders. One thing I can't find is "the original firmware must be on the vex SD card" is there a place I can source the original vex firmware? I cannot find it

thanks so much! still no luck either with new firmware or starting fresh. My HDMI output now is also not outputting anything :[ I'll try some more torubleshooting steps but otherwise I will stop derailing this thread since problem has now escaped the scope of the new fw. def wish there were some kind of debug or log file to look at. expander is detected just no output and not able to save any settings without "Fail" message

EDIT: recovered! I wasn't initially clear to me that the zip file provided in the linked thread must be unzipped and files placed at root of VideoExpander SD card, back in business on stable firmware at least sorry again for derailing
