Jump recording, stereo samples?
#1
Hi,

I'm about to buy a NerdSEQ in the next couple days, however I need to know if it will do several things to fit my desired workflow.

Namely I will buy an Arturia Keystep along with it and use the MIDI expander for step recording, but I want to be able to jump record. I want to press a note, have it record, then jump forward some user defined amount of steps once the key is released, automatically. This will be important for recording IDM drum patterns quickly and intuitively. Is this possible? If so, how easy is it to change the jump amount on the fly? I've read through some of the manual, but the answer is not clear to me. ChatGPT seems to think it's possible though using the "step jump parameter", but i don't see anything about this in the manual.

Also, as an aside, I just want to confirm that there is stereo sample support on the NerdSEQ along with panning effects? Reading the product page makes it seem like this is a feature with the more recent firmware updates: "Sample support for RAW 8 bit mono and WAV 8/16 bit, Mono/Stereo"

Thanks

You can load stereo wav files but as the audio tracks are both mono that's how they will be played back. You could, in theory, split a stereo file into 2 mono samples and load one onto each audio track, triggering both together. It's also possible to use the delay effect on each audio track to get an interesting 'stereo' output.

I'll definitely be experimenting with the delay effect a lot then, and I figure I can just use a voltage inverter and couple VCAs for stereo panning of the mono samples because splitting them will be so much unnecessary work. I've already put the inverter and VCAs in my system just in case.

What about the jump recording though?

It’s not like that it is a stereo sample system. If you load a stereo sample it will downsample and mono it internally. Also there is not much sample memory.  The main power is in the CV/Gate system and the sample part is a nice addition. Though you can still do some nice things with it.

The function you search for is called edit steps and it enhances the steps after a note/trigger had been filled in.

Wonderful, the edit steps function looks like it will work perfectly for this type of workflow! I am so excited to give this a try.

With regards to the sample memory, it should be more than enough for my needs. I saw this video using only the NerdSEQ's built in sequencer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3EaEoSoob4) so it definitely can be very powerful. I intend to use the NerdSEQ primarily for drums, using internal samples and also triggering Moffenzeef's Muskrat and Erica Synths Sample Drum, however if I find the sampler too limiting with the NerdSEQ it is very likely I'll eventually grab a BitBox instead of the Muskrat and Sample Drum because I'm seeing that is one of the most popular pairings with the NerdSEQ.

Hi, I've bought the NerdSEQ and received it just yesterday! I really like it. I'm still hiking up the steep learning curve, but I've managed to get step recording working and it's pretty straightforward with the edit steps function. I do have a question though:

Is there a faster way to change the edit steps parameter on the fly, rather than having to go into the setup screen all the time, perhaps with MIDI? I was looking through the mapping section and I didn't see anything that would allow me to do this. If not, I think a great feature would be to allow control of edit steps on the fly with MIDI CC or even note values and have a little indicator on the top right showing the current step interval.

Edit: Also, I can't seem to get the edit steps function to work in patterns for audio tracks, only in the other tracks, for some reason. I'm on firmware 2.00 so I'll see about updating to 2.01 to see if this is fixed. It's probably more likely I haven't configured the track properly yet.

Sure I can add edit steps into the mappings.
Anyways always go with the latest firmware version because you miss all the fun.

That would be cool! I updated my firmware last night to 2.01. The step input MIDI mapping does not work on the audio tracks which is strange. It does work when doing SHIFT + CURSOR UP. Maybe I'm doing some wrong with my MIDI controller setup?

I got to check that. Midi setup should not be the issue.
