Note/Trigger/Modulation Indicator improvements?
#1
Hi, I tried searching but only found one thread of this topic (I might be searching incorrectly though!)

Are there any plans to look at improvements to the indicator panel (to the right of the tracks on the sequencer page?)

At the moment:
If a modular track is set to midi you only get a single red dot showing when notes play (it doesn't seem to flash when notes change like a normal trigger does either).
If a modular track is set an expander you get nothing at all.
If track 7 or 8 is set to midi you get nothing at all.

The modular tracks are great with all relevant information shown. It would be nice to have something to show what's going on with other types of track.

Obviously expanders have multiple/re-routable outputs so it's more challenging to decide what shoud be shown, but even showing some trigger dots would be better than nothing. I am sure you (Thomas) could come u with a great solution together with community input.

If the display could change with its type (so for instance if CV16 was assigned to track 2) then that tracks' indicator display could change to a little grid with 16 dots to show triggers (as an example) that would be awesome.
I don't know how "locked in" the indicator panel graphics are though, or whether there are reasons why this wouldn't be possible.

With so many events flying around inside Nerdseq, as much visible information as possible being shown makes a huge difference in tracking down what is happening where.

Hope something like this could be considered.

I think you already got the point. They are no triggers with Midi and it shows if a Midi note is on or if all are off.
As for the CV16, there is nothing really to show here. The trigger 16 states of the gates/triggers are not known by the NerdSEQ itself. It sends only a command and there is no feedback.

7+8 has been classically audio tracks and even if they are not assigned to audio tracks, you can still use their samples or oscillators etc. You might always want to see them if they are running or not....

If you got any good ideas with knowning that there is no feedback from expanders, which the knowledge on how much is visible on the right side (and how little pixels)...I am always open for that of course.
PLEASE use the search function if something have been asked or discussed before.

When I said "midi triggers", I really meant to say note on/off... if it could show the note on/offs of each of the 4 lanes that would be a great improvement (or even better the value of the 4 note values as notes or mini bars - with or without note on/off information).

Ah okay, so the Trigger 16 for instance does all the "work" inside the expander itself rather than from the Nerdseq?
I don't fully understand as I don't know anything about the internal architecture... I kind of thought the tracks "knew" what they were outputting when the track type is set. Any kind of indicator of use on the track would certainly help.
It depends on what the "commands" actually are that are sent I suppose.

With that in mind I have no idea what I could suggest for the side as I don't what is possible.
You saw my original ideas (small dots for gates/notes)... I don't think the size is that much of an issue really.
Happy to make suggestions but don't want to suggest something thats going to be impossible obviously.

So you can play samples/waves (presumably with FX commands somewhere) yet still have the audio tracks assigned to MIDI? Wow, I didn't think that was possible haha... ok that certainly makes sense you'd want to see the waveforms!
I should have realised...

Thanks for the reply!

The NerdSEQ could send a 'retrigger' but it never knows when that is finished. There can be much things sent from any other source than a trigger16 track which makes it difficult to show what the selected track did. CV16 could be LFOs or Envelopes and their values (together with possible notes, glide positions) can't be shown. And so on and so on. It is not possible to return all these information and the info in the NerdSEQ itself is obsolete the moment it has been sent in much of the times. (Not always of course)

They are little things possible with small dots as indicators. Any text etc would not fit and so wouldn't make any sense in multi-column situations.

Yeah I do appreciate there is so much information available it would be impossible to expect it to show everything, or a fine level of detail, and wouldn't expect that kind of feedback.

For the 16 CV expander my initial thoughts would be 6 dots to show the activity of the 6 lanes, with implementation something like this:

Triggers = Dot on for the length of the trigger/gate (turns off when finished).
Notes/CV values = Dot on for any value set. Dot briefly turns off and back on again when value changes.
(Any automators added to these 2 above don't really need showing as that would be too confusing I think).

If only automators were used on a lane:
Envelopes = Dot briefly flahes with any envelope triggered.
LFO's = Dot stays on for any LFO started Dot turns off if no LFO's are running.

You could have 4 different colour dots for the types of data (triiger/gate, note/cv, envelopes, LFO's) so you knew what was what.

The trigger 16 expander has its own lights so you can always tell if something is being triggered or not,
but a grid of 16 dots to also show the triggers would be great. (Nice to be able to see everything just on the Nerdseq, especially when you're focused and in the zone with it).

MIDI and Multi tracks need separate consideration... for now I'll leave them as this post is already getting quite long.
I'm happy to have a think about possible solutions for them if you like my ideas in general.

I think that would provide more than enough information really, especially on a complex expander like the CV16.
Once you get used to what the dots represent I think it would provide a great deal of visibility of what is happening.

Thanks for yout time and replies.
