Still, it would need placeholders for all pattern lenghts.
Not an option for me.
What about a prefered setting:
A: As it is right now
B: Shift+Start starts only patterns in the row and stops others, but if the row is empty it doesn’t stop anything and keeps playing like nothing was presssed

Yeah I think I would be happy with option B.

Yes the whole row empty. Just to avoid that all all stops if pressen there by accident.

There are two different issues in play here: (I think!)
1. some means of playing "what you see is what you get" in a row. A strict, repeat this row behaviour. Empty slots == silent track.
2. a way of having empty patterns (to have a silent track) in a row, without taking up a lot of visual space, i.e. different colors or symbols available
I understand the problems associated with 1, that it isn't normal tracker style, etc. It's ableton style. It would of course, prevent normal trickling down, and really only makes sense with an isolated row. That said, I think a key combo like shift+double start, or shift-ok-start could work.
I'd be happy with just 2, though, as it meets the same goal. The user is responsible for making their own empty patterns as he sees fit. The only difference is that I'm able to define a pattern as being 'blue' or 'red' or whatever, some different font or background color, or choice of symbol. That way a song doesn't have a lot of 00 or 11s used as a flag that look similar to other patterns. I could choose one colour for empty patterns, and have multiple empty patterns of different lengths, but choose the same colour.
Thanks for considering this kind of thing, thanks for helpful comments, all.
(edit - somehow missed comments above. Yes, option B sounds good, addresses 1. above, but with a mode switch rather than a key combo)

Colours are already planned for pattern groups. Also i try to avoid key combinations as much as possible.
I will keep on thinking about whats the best solution. And keep in mind, not high priority at the moment.

I think a shift/play command for the row would solve it - if you want a track to stop looping, just insert an empty pattern [00]. The shift/play command would totally solve my issues and make arranging songs soooo much easier.

I personally think the only logical solution is :
a) to have a "STOP" instruction that you'd put on a slot the same way you do it to stop a table (with a symbol like \/\/ or whatever the stop table symbol is)
b) SHIFT-START launches the row and nothing above it. If the row has empty slots; if something was already playing on that channel it will continue playing - unless there's the \/\/ stop symbol

a) There is already the stop function in the FX. There won't be a ** or anything like that for the general stop.
b) I understand this in a different way and my idea for implementation is to have the start/shift start FX command with track and sequencer row as parameter. Then everything could be started from everywhere.

I thought you were meant to be on holidays!
Not sure I explained my idea quite right - i meant the ** in the actual sequencer view, not the pattern view! So rather than having 00, or 01 etc, you'd have ** which would be stop whatever was playing on that channel.
edit : I'm basically reiterating what OP said I think, this is how Ableton Live behaves

Oh i think the screens are mixed up in the last messages.
This topic is about the sequencer screen and some last messages are related to another feature request in the pattern screens.
