Midi -> possible hanging gates
#1
(copied from firmware->V1.20 Thread)

But one problem:

I am getting stuck gates all the time from MIDI. After sending full stop signal it will trigger the first gate and then it's stuck again.

The only way to solve it is to reboot. I have had this issue with previous firmware but it was solved in 1.19. Now it's back again in 1.20

Hey, oh that is not good.
The Midi implementation changed completely with the V1.20 and was tested quite a time. However there have been 2 reports of that but i asked for more information but never got any more feedback and it was impossible for me to reproduce it. I used several sources and tried to let it fail but it always worked well for me.
However, it seems to be there and maybe you can tell me some information about it.
What hardware do you use, how did you set up and can you reproduce it/how do you reproduce it?

Hi, I am using Digitakt as a little keyboard and to program simple beats / melodies into the modular as part of my workflow. So the Digitakt sends clock and midi notes / triggers to the 6 cv/gate tracks.

I don’t know if you remember me, but I had this issue before and you were testing with the Digitone, (which I also have), and you did a quick update which totally fixed the issue.

In terms of recreating it, it will happen within 5 minutes every time of having the Nerdseq on and working (which would involve a few times stopping and starting the sequencer).

What happens is the gate gets stuck open, sending full stop turns the gate off. But after that, starting the sequencer it will be stuck open on the first gate received every time. I hope this helps. Apart from this issue everything else is looking really promising!

Happy New Year!

Ah ok i see. I remember i bought the digitone just for that (and rarely use it now, because i don't have time Smile ).
I am sure the issue is a different one now. The main midi input changed completely from fixed to flexible, from monophonic to polyphonic notes. And i checked for the last issue already when implementing and again when i tried to reproduce.

I will copy this now to the bug reports and lets continue there. I will sent my questions there to hopefully be able to fix it soon!

It seems to be reproducable for you with the Digitone.
Is it possible to export a project from it (or dump so i can import?) so i can use it and repeat what you do (best would be if i would play start and at some point it would always fail)?
I also would like to have your NerdSEQ project and with both it will hopefully also fail with me so i can fix it!

Hi, I just tried it with Digitone and the very first note hangs (within 5 secs of turning the Nerdseq and Digitone on).

Both are new projects on the devices with no information in so I don't think saving them would be of any benefit?

It literally just happened immediately on first midi note sent.

But how did you set it up? Do you play notes by hand? Multiple notes? How are the nerdseq channels set up exactly? Recording or playing? And is it reproducable?

I played one single note by hand on Digitone and the gate on Nerdseq hung. I did plan on programming a sequence but just played one note to check it was working first, and when it hung I didn’t feel the need to program a sequence as it had already happened. Nerdseq was setup to receive midi input but not to record it. Midi channels 1 - 4 on the Digitone tracks correspond to cv gate tracks 1 - 4 on the Nerdseq. After the note hang I hit 2x STOP on Digitone which stopped the gate on Nerdseq. Then I played one note by hand on Digitone and it hangs again. Yes it’s reproducable, I can’t stop it happening.

I don’t know if it’s helpful for you to look back at my previous posts when you fixed this same issue with Digitone & Digitakt midi to Nerdseq before? It’s exactly the same issue - at least from a user perspective.

OK i will give it a try.
With reproducable i mean, turning both on and get always the same result. I think when it's wrong then it's already wrong.

It took me like 10 minutes until i also got it to fail for the first time. Thats a good sign, because then i can debug and see where it hangs.
I can't get it hanging with the first note actually, but with pressing many at the same time. Something i tested extensively with other midi keyboards but couldn't get it to fail.
Lets see whats going wrong!

And i found the bug!

So that should be solved (also double stop again as it should be). While hardcore testing i found out another thing with the digitone and excessive multiple note playing. It seems that sometimes a note is not turned off and sometimes a note turned off twice while it should be another one.
I will check that with the computer sniffing digitones midi data tomorrow to confirm...and i guess that i need to update the digitone firmware first as well (though it is not stated as bugfix in the changelogs)..still running V1.10.

Glad you found it. Really want to get everything in my workflow well oiled! Thanks

My workflow is probably pretty different to other people:

- Create patterns (beats and melodies) on Digitakt / Digitone
- Record some of the parts into Nerdseq that I want to replace sounds for in modular
- Use Digitakt / Digitone as keyboard / pad trigger for recording into Nerdseq
- Build more complex and evolving patterns in Nerdseq, add fx etc, sound design and fx in modular
- Use Nerdseq to pattern change Digitakt and Digitone for the sounds still coming from them whilst Nerdseq controls the modular sequences

And the final piece of the puzzle for the future:

- Nerdseq to control other hardware synths via midi. (If and when I get the appropriate expanders to have enough channels to do all that. We will see)!

Thanks

So actually i did some more tests and i can confirm that the Digitone produces hanging Midi notes which in fact means, sometimes note off is missing. (also with latest Digitone V1.21). I can reproduce that. Happens both with the NerdSEQ and a Midi sniffer (no NerdSEQ involved).
I assume it shouldn't affect the main use too much, i guess if it ever has been reported at all. (i will do so).

I am not sure, but polyphonic sequencing on multiple tracks is already possible of course. And you probably know that you don't get more tracks with the expanders?
