Fell in love with the Nerdseq + launchpad combo but  always ran out of channels. Well, not anymore.

Firmware Update featured in More CVs YouTube Livestream
Posted by: salvobeta - 06-30-2020, 10:53 PM - Forum: Firmware / Manual - Replies (3)

All at XOR, thanks for doing that Livestream! It pointed out a few features I didn't quite understand with my More CVs expander, and it also caused me to also buy the More Triggers. The new features in the firmware look amazing. And there were some fixes to bugs that I've noticed that you mentioned are now fixed.

When will we be expecting that firmware to be released? The video was published a month ago, and in it you said that the firmware would be out shortly after that broadcast.

Any updates? Release candidates? It's been quiet in this forum.

Compser Mode and Live Mode for Launchpad
Posted by: spilthyfred - 06-28-2020, 06:53 PM - Forum: Feature requests - Replies (1)

Hi,

I have a simple request concerning the sequencer menu on the Launchpad.

It would be similar to the "OK to Enter Pattern" implementation on the hardware.

I would like to be able to add new patterns by simply pressing any empty pad - the pad would light up to indicate a pattern has been added. Then I'd like to be able to enter any active pattern page on the LP by just pressing its lit up pad.

This could be a "Composer Mode" where the function of Button C is flipped. Since the pads themselves would be dedicated to adding and entering patterns, if you wanted to launch a pattern on the sequencer page you would hold down Button C and press the patterns pad.

Then there could be a "Live Mode" where it functions as it already does for on the fly launching of patterns.

  NerdSEQ vs NerdSEQ Portable features
Posted by: mvdirty - 06-26-2020, 01:52 AM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (5)

I anticipate buying either a NerdSEQ or a NerdSEQ Portable, though likely not until later in the summer.

The choice will be a challenging one for me because I am aiming to keep everything in the rack if at all possible, but if the Portable version is a strong enough improvement and still integrates well enough into Eurorack then I might permit myself to go that route.

I’ve read once or twice that NerdSEQ Portable is to be more powerful than the NerdSEQ in at least some ways. However, I’ve not seen detail regarding how it will be more powerful or seen a more general comparison (along the lines of a comparison table) between the two.

Does a NerdSEQ vs NerdSEQ Portable comparison exist somewhere that I’ve missed? Their respective pages don’t get into some of the details and certainly not in relation to the other.

For example:
- Built-in I/O differences?
- Expansion capability differences?
- Any pattern/step/table/patch/etc. quantity differences?
- FX or other functions that one supports but the other not?
- Sample playback size/rate/depth differences?
- Screen differences?
- Processor/memory specs for us techie folks?
- etc.

Clock a track via CV input while other tracks are normally clocked?
Posted by: mvdirty - 06-26-2020, 01:40 AM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (9)

Forgive me if I missed this in the manual or in the forum when I looked for it recently:

While one or more other tracks are following internal or external clock as per normal, is it possible to step a specified track instead via triggers/gates received on an assigned CV input? And, if that is possible, how does that behaviour interact with the use of tables?

  Midi Note Retrig
Posted by: rhgk - 06-24-2020, 01:25 PM - Forum: Feature requests - No Replies

I generally play into the nerdseq via a midi keyboard. Currently, if I play overlapping notes, the gate does not trigger, leading to a glide effect.

I think it would be a cool addition for live midi play if there was an option to trigger the gate on every new note on. I see the benefit to the current set-up for a lot of people, so I think this should probably be an optional setting change, but I definitely think that it would improve workflow for users who play in notes live rather than inserting them by step.

Thanks!

  Workflow improvements

Hi,

I'm mostly happy with nerdseq, in particular I love the sample tracks that have brought back the fun of breakbeat slicing for me. I love to use nerdseq like the clipview in ableton and enjoy editing the patterns live.

However, I'm frequently running into a few smaller issues that quickly cause disaster in a live situation. My biggest gripe is the input of the effects. While scrolling through the massive list of effects, these are already active and can cause huge mayhem (setting tempo, active playing pattern, break, ...) once the sequencer plays the step that is currently being edited.

I think this could be much improved by having a way to edit the effect in a separate menu and to commit the effect into the sequencer.
For example you could press OK on the effect field which brings up this menu. In this menu, the commands could be grouped together in multiple lines to allow quick access, for example for trigger commands, sample related effects, etc. The ones most likely to be used should be at the top for quick access. I would essentially imagine this as a 2D array of effect commands.

This means while you select the effect, it would not be active, but only go live once you press enter to insert it. In this screen you could also enter the actual effect values to avoid disaster while scrolling through, for example when setting up the sample offset. Maybe this could even be considered for the note column as well but I feel that note entry is much more fluent than effect values.

The most frequent way I run into this:
I set a BREAK command after 16 steps and then want to start slicing the break. But since BREAK now was the last active command, when I want to change sample offset somewhere I will instead insert BREAK. And at 170 bpm chances are high that your pattern then is thrown out of sync. Bonus points for accidentally triggering STSP in the process which basically means game over.

Another minor annoyance: when entering offset commands and you press shift + arrow up it will go to the highest possible value, however you cannot delete this value again but have to painstakingly scroll down both fields. (shift + down arrow down does not work). I feel like this behavior is wrong in multiple ways:

  • The higher byte can only go from 0-16, shift + up should use a slower increment, maybe 4?
  • Shift + down arrow should go all the way to zero (this is true for the cursor being on high or low byte)
  • Editing the higher byte should not change the lower byte

Using shift+down arrow on the effect column does not go all the way to zero either

And lastly, for convenience it would be nice when setting up the BPM value command if the bpm value could be displayed in decimal somewhere. I also noticed that the BPM value of nerdseq seems to be incorrect: When syncing elektron devices to nerdseq, they report a higher BPM than what nerdseq claims. Found the option to show the decimal value. It does not work for midi program change though. Wrong bpm was fixed by updating the firmware. I missed the the 1.21A update over 1.21.

Sorry for this long wall of text, I love my nerdseq despite these frustrations Smile

edit: rembered two more suggestions:

It would be awesome to allow one of the CV inputs to be used to enter effect values / notes / etc that currently are under the cursor. I thought that Cursor CV would be the correct input but I cannot get it to work.

For the sample load menu it would be awesome if nerdseq would remember the last folder visited and maybe even remember the last sample selected.

  Recording modulations
Posted by: zerius - 06-23-2020, 11:53 AM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (1)

Hi everybody !

I can manually enter modulations as Notes C1/C2 etc and I'm wondering if I could do the same while sending cv into mod ?

By now it seems only recording decimals on the row when I send cv from my Stillson Hammer, but I would better prefer seeing notes values instead.

  *SOLVED* CV Exp track problem
Posted by: roolib - 06-23-2020, 10:50 AM - Forum: Beauty and less important bugs/glitches - Replies (4)

Hello !

Big fan of this nerdy sequencer !  Heart  Rolleyes

I have encountered no major problem since I bought it, but today something weird happened...

I put my cv expander track 1, and my trig expander track 6

On my cv exp track, I control cv note on cv1 to a Shapeshifter, and an envellope on cv2 to my MMG, filtering the shapeshifter...

On my trig exp track, a kickdrum and a fracture...

When I unmute my track6, it makes the envellope desapear...I have to change the sustain setting of the envellope to ear it back again...

No fx in my two tracks, except a brk for both, and a lfo on the cv note mod track....

I tried to put the cv expander track on track 2, I have the same issue....

Is this already happenned to somebody ?

Thanks a lot !!

Huh Heart Blush

status update : it seems i can't use the two expanders at the same time, at any case...
