Incoming Nerdseq and a Few ?s
Posted by: Karlo - 02-15-2021, 04:01 PM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (2)

Looking forward to precise control this sequencer appears to offer. I have a few questions:

1a) In a modular track, can you use fx glide on a mod lane output to very slowly open a VCA for volume increases/decreases?
1b) How slow can this be done?
1c) Is the CV smooth?

Using a midi controller, I get the impression you can offset the incoming midi notes to compensate for any differences in midi controllers and what they output as C0.
2a) Is my understanding correct?
2b) Can I shift the incoming midi notes up 2 octaves?

3a) In order to force note scale quantization, I need to use a table to accomplish this?
3b) Do I just put the table on step 00 in a pattern and it will apply to all steps in the pattern?
3c) Does this table apply to incoming midi notes for live recording?

Thanks,

Karlo

  External Clock - Run/Start
Posted by: Kubase - 02-15-2021, 09:36 AM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (5)

Hi,

The manual states that if an external midi clock is used, a start stop signal is received.  This works, but I'd like to use an analogue clock.  I've tried reset and run signals into the NerdSeq reset input, and the clock light illuminates, but the sequencer doesn't start when I press 'play' elsewhere.

  "Play" with no patterns?
Posted by: grib - 02-13-2021, 03:09 PM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (1)

The Nerdseq is my main sequencer, but I also have several others in the case, all clocked by Pam. I need to make sure all the sequencers are in sync so it's important to me to be able to start Pam, then globally reset all the sequencers back to "1" with a single button press.

In order to reset the Nerdseq this way, its master transport control needs to be in "play" mode so that the big clock is moving. But I don't want to actually play any patterns, I just want to start the clock.

The only way I can do this that I know of is to leave a track completely empty, then move the cursor to that track and press Start. If there are any patterns in the track, one of them will start playing, so the track needs to be completely empty.

So far this has always been possible, but it feels a little weird to have to give up a track for this functionality. Is there another way to start the master transport without starting any tracks or patterns?

Hi,

I'm trying to set up step recording and this message is displaying at bottom of the record setup screen?

  Record samples directly using inputs
Posted by: topherdavis - 02-12-2021, 02:11 PM - Forum: Feature requests - Replies (3)

I looked pretty carefully to see if someone else posted this and I can't believe I didn't find it. Maybe you can already do it and I don't understand how? It looks to me like I can only record the sequencer values in the sample tracks.

I would think I would be able to record audio directly into the Nerdseq and save it in one of the sample slots. The workflow of going to a computer is kind of a drag.

I finally found another post where you said it isn't possible because they are DC coupled and the chip (or something) isn't suited well for this.

I really think you should reconsider the expander for recording audio input. The functionality of those two tracks are really limited without that.

  Clock master/slave behaviour
Posted by: Kubase - 02-12-2021, 10:39 AM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (2)

Hi, I won’t go into all the boring stuff as to why I’m asking this - but if the NerdSeq is set up to send midi clock, and this clock is going to a device that can also put out an analog clock, and this is patched into Nerdeq’s clock input, what happens?  Does the Nerd use its own clock or the one it’s receiving?

  Table question
Posted by: sak-rwsd - 02-11-2021, 09:16 PM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (1)

I’m trying to dig a bit deeper into tables here.  I couldn’t find this in the manual, but is there any way to automate the components of the table from the FX.  For instance, to change the type of sequencing, so I can alternate between running forward and backward in a controlled manner.  Or do I just need to create a new table for each configuration?  Thanks!

  save my nerdseq career
Posted by: Gminorcoles - 02-11-2021, 04:17 PM - Forum: General Questions - Replies (11)

I really loved my nerdseq when I got it. It was simple up front but with a lot of complexity hidden behind, the timing is great, a lot of i/o.

But I have been using it less and less, and after I moved my studio downstairs the nerdseq was among some gear that never got turned back on, and then I got around to it and one night was like "ok, beat creation powers.. go!" but the tools that got me results in order of decreasing ease were

playing in rhythms to be recorded in my mc 909
editing rhythms in the piano roll of FL Studio and then playing them through ES-3 ADAT into Squarp Rample or mc 909
...
typing things into Nerdseq

I am sure the problem is me, but I notice the same patterns slowing me down on the nerdseq.

Interface is small for my fingers to type compared to computer keyboard. key sequences (for me ) are not ergonomic, has to be done crouched over the modular rack.
screen real estate - very small.
beats per measure vs screen real estate - if I want my time division to be equal to 32nd notes, this means I can never see the entire sequence on one screen.
beats per measure vs pattern length - on my mc 909 I can create, lets say a 32 bar pattern. this gives a lot of room to create a partially repeating or non repeating pattern and with any kind of notes - 64th, triplets, whatever I can play. not a "fair" comparison, but it is my gear close at hand.
triggering the nerdseq from external, using nerdseq as a "pattern instrument" - this as far as I know, doesnt really fit the nerdseq, but it feels like it should be a core usecase.

I still really love the idea of the nerdseq, but I have to be ruthless with myself and not hoard gear. I have a fixed cube of space in which I have declared my setup must fit, and if I am not get use out of something, even if it is my fault as a bad musician with weak mental powers, I should sell it.

these are not complaints rather my feedback on how my limitations intersect with nerdseq featureset.

and posed as a question, I would ask "any advice on how to improve my understanding of nerdseq to save my use of this tool"

thanks

  MIDI - Clone to CV16
Posted by: anamorphic - 02-11-2021, 12:06 PM - Forum: Feature requests - Replies (2)

Currently, if a track is assigned to MIDI and the 'Clone to Modular' setting is enabled, MIDI notes and note off from the first note column are sent to the local CV and gate output of the track.

Is a 'Clone to CV16' setting planned for a future release to assign note columns in a MIDI track to each of the CV16 expander outputs?

As an example, if Track 4 is assigned to MIDI, could note columns 1, 2, 3 and 4 be assigned to CV16 expander outputs 13,14,15,16 respectively?

  Cv inputs (auto channel)
Posted by: cfdj - 02-11-2021, 11:13 AM - Forum: Feature requests - Replies (1)

Hi,

I have this idea while testing the cv input for recording. Would it makes sense to have some sort of auto channel/pattern way of recordings cvs? This will make the recording layer detached from the track and more attached to patterns.

For example this would need the setting the cv inputs as:

CV1: Focused pattern CV
CV2: Focused pattern Trig
CV3: Focused pattern MOD

So what this will do to allow recording multiple stuff if you are only inside the pattern. It makes sense and it would usable to at least to me. Any thoughts? Or perhaps this is possible and I missed this somehow?
